Originally released in 1954 on Columbia Records, Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy is considered to be one of essential albums of the jazz canon. Armstrong and his All-Stars recorded eleven tracks by the “Father of the Blues,” W.C. Handy in a Chicago studio and created what critics have deemed "Armstrong’s finest recording of the decade.” The album includes highlights such as “Loveless Love,” “Beale Street Blues” and “St. Louis Blues, ” and Armstrong’s take on the oft-recorded song is said to be its greatest version. Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy is now available on 180-gram vinyl, cut from the original mono tapes by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound and pressed and plated at RTI. This is the definitive pressing of this landmark album.
